JAMMU/SRINAGAR, January 28, 2026 — The Traffic Police Headquarters Jammu and Kashmir has issued a critical travel plan for January 29, 2026, following significant road damage and winter hazards on major transit routes.
Due to a 40–50 meter single-lane stretch at Kishtwari Pather caused by a sinking road, Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMVs) will now operate on an alternate-day basis to manage the bottleneck. While Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs), private cars, and passenger vehicles are permitted to ply from both Jammu and Srinagar, authorities strongly advise commuters to travel only during daylight hours.
Night travel is discouraged due to the high risk of shooting stones and landslides between Ramban and Banihal, compounded by dangerous frost and slippery conditions between Nachlana and the NAVYUG Tunnel.
Traffic management for HMVs remains highly regulated; heavy vehicles will only be allowed from Jakheni, Udhampur toward Srinagar after 1400 hours, provided road conditions are stable.
Meanwhile, the Mughal Road, SSG Road (Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri), and the Kishtwar-Sinthan-Anantnag NH-244 remain completely closed to all vehicular movement due to heavy snow accumulation.
Commuters are urged to maintain strict lane discipline and avoid overtaking to prevent gridlock. Before beginning any journey, travelers must verify the current road status by contacting the following Traffic Control Units: Jammu (0191-2459048, 0191-2740550, 9419147732), Srinagar (0194-2450022, 2485396, 18001807091), Ramban (9419993745, 1800-180-7043), Udhampur (8491928625), PCR Kishtwar (9906154100), PCR Kargil (9541902330, 9541902331), or by dialing the emergency number 103.
