Jammu Municipal Corporation Hosts ‘SafaiMitra Suraksha Shivir’ to Empower Women in Sanitation Under SBM-U 2.0

JAMMU, MARCH 14, 2026: As part of the week-long celebrations for International Women’s Day centered on the theme “Naari Leads Swachhata,” the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) organized a comprehensive ‘SafaiMitra Suraksha Shivir’ at its premises today.

The initiative, dedicated to the health, safety, and dignity of women sanitation workers and Self-Help Groups (SHGs), was led by Commissioner JMC and Mission Director of SBM-U 2.0, Devansh Yadav.

Joined by Joint Commissioner Health and Sanitation, Abdul Star, and Chief Medical Officer Jammu, Harbaksh Singh, the event highlighted the critical role these women play as the backbone of the Swachh Bharat Mission Urban 2.0 in the city. Other senior officials, including Health Officer Vinod Sharma and Priyanka Malhotra, were also in attendance to support the frontline workforce.

During the Shivir, a specialized medical camp was established in collaboration with the District Health Society to provide essential screenings for female workers, specifically testing for Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C.

To further bolster occupational safety, high-quality Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kits were distributed to all female sanitation staff and SHG members.

This effort aligns with the ‘Give to Gain’ philosophy, ensuring that those responsible for the city’s cleanliness are equipped with the necessary tools to protect their own wellbeing.

The event also featured technical support from Swaaha to coordinate Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) activities, ensuring safety protocols are effectively communicated to all workers.

Addressing the gathering, Devansh Yadav underscored the importance of the NAMASTE scheme (National Action for Mechanized Sanitation Ecosystem), which aims to eliminate hazardous cleaning practices through mechanization and safety standards.

He praised the emerging leadership of women entrepreneurs and SHGs within the waste management value chain. The program concluded with a formal pledge to hold these Suraksha Shivirs regularly to maintain a robust safety net for the workforce.

All health data and activity logs from the camp are being uploaded to the official Swachhatam Portal to facilitate consistent monitoring and necessary follow-up care for the participants.
