Jammu and Kashmir Security Update: Army Chief Confirms Sharp Decline in Terrorist and Local Recruitment
NEW DELHI, January 12, 2026: General Upendra Dwivedi, the Army Chief, has reported a landmark shift in the security landscape of Jammu and Kashmir, stating that local terrorist recruitment has become nearly non-existent.
During a press conference in the national capital, the General detailed that active local militancy has dropped to single digits, with only two instances of recruitment recorded during the entirety of 2025.
This significant decline marks a pivotal moment for the region, as coordinated efforts between security forces and civil authorities continue to stabilize the western front and ensure the environment remains firmly under control.
The General further revealed that 31 terrorists were eliminated in 2025, noting that 65% of those neutralized were of Pakistani origin.
Key milestones included Operation Mahadev, which targeted those behind the Pahalgam attack, and Operation Sindoor, cited as a premier example of tri-service synergy and political resolve.
These operations have paved the way for a transition from “terrorism to tourism,” highlighted by the successful Sri Amarnath Yatra that hosted over four lakh devotees this year.
General Dwivedi attributed these successes to the proactive roles of the CAPFs, intelligence agencies, and the Ministry of Home Affairs, while warning that any future threats would be met with an equally resolute response.
