Jambu Zoo Expands Wildlife Collection with New Hippopotamus Pair from Chennai

JAMMU, MARCH 13, 2026 — In a significant boost to its wildlife diversity, the Jambu Zoo officially welcomed a pair of hippopotamuses today, following a successful animal exchange program with the Arignar Anna Zoological Park in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

The acquisition, approved by the Central Zoo Authority, involved the exchange of a pair of Himalayan Black Bears for the large semi-aquatic mammals. This strategic addition was the brainchild of Sarvesh Rai, PCCF/Head of Forest Force and former Chief Wildlife Warden, aimed at enhancing the educational and recreational value of the facility.

The hippopotamus, derived from the Ancient Greek term for “river horse,” holds the title of the third-largest land mammal after elephants and rhinoceroses. Interestingly, while they share physical traits with pigs, their closest living relatives are actually cetaceans, such as whales and dolphins.

The delicate transport of these massive animals from Chennai to Jammu was managed by a specialized team, including Range Officer Noor ul Amin and Veterinary Assistant Surgeon Dr. Ranjit Katoch. To ensure the hippos’ well-being during the long train journey, the team utilized a customized water sprinkler system to regulate their body temperature.

Upon their arrival this morning, the pair was placed into a mandatory 15-day quarantine period to ensure they acclimate safely to their new environment before being revealed to the public. Chaturbhuja Behera, the current Chief Wildlife Warden of J&K, expressed his excitement over the new arrivals, noting that they will serve as a major draw for students and tourists alike.

With the hippos joining an impressive roster of lions, tigers, and crocodiles, the zoo management has confirmed that more species will be introduced in the coming months alongside upgraded visitor facilities.
