Jal Shakti Minister Javed Ahmad Rana Launches Major Flood Protection Projects for River Tawi in Jammu

JAMMU, April 03, 2026 — In a major step toward urban resilience and infrastructure safety, the Minister for Jal Shakti, Forest, Ecology & Environment, and Tribal Affairs, Javed Ahmad Rana, today laid the foundation stones for two critical flood protection projects along the River Tawi. Highlighting the river as the “Pride of Jammu,” the Minister initiated restoration works on the earthen embankment at the left bank near Bikram Chowk, a ₹3.05 crore project slated for completion within nine months.

Simultaneously, a ₹82 lakh project was launched to repair damaged flood protection structures on the right bank near Hari Singh Park. The ceremony was attended by MLA Jammu East Yudhvir Sethi, Chief Engineer I&FC Manoj Gupta, and other senior officials, marking a significant commitment by the Omar Abdullah-led government to safeguard the city’s heart from seasonal flood risks.

During the event, Minister Javed Rana emphasized that these initiatives are part of a broader, modernized strategy to strengthen the Union Territory’s water resource infrastructure. The technical scope of the work includes the construction of robust crate revetments, the installation of concrete panels to reinforce existing structures, and extensive backfilling to stabilize eroded sections of the riverbank.

The Minister reaffirmed that the safety of lives and livelihoods remains the government’s top priority, promising that all damages from recent floods will be addressed with urgency.

By combining flood mitigation with the long-term vision of river beautification, the administration aims to transform the Tawi into a secure and vibrant landmark for the people of Jammu, ensuring that critical residential and commercial areas remain protected against future environmental challenges.
