IWMP Rajouri’s Block Doongi Wins Watershed Janbhagidari Cup and ₹20 Lakh Cash Prize

RAJOURI, DECEMBER 25: In a major achievement for rural development in the region, the Integrated Watershed Management Programme (IWMP), Block Doongi, has clinched the prestigious Watershed Janbhagidari Cup. This top honor, which includes a ₹20 lakh cash award, recognizes the block’s exceptional community participation and success in sustainable watershed management.

The award was presented by the Minister for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, Javid Ahmad Dar, at a ceremony in Jammu, where it was received by Project Manager IWMP Rajouri, Auqil Nuvaid, on behalf of the district team.The recognition highlights a transformative year for Block Doongi during the 2024–25 financial year, where community-led initiatives significantly boosted water conservation and agricultural productivity.

The project focused on creating durable assets designed to recharge groundwater and provide reliable irrigation to rural farmers. By involving local residents in every step of the process—from planning to execution—the program has successfully turned watershed management into a collective community mission.A total of 123 durable assets were developed under the program to strengthen the region’s ecological and economic resilience. These include: * 37 Water Harvesting Tanks and 47 Field Channels to improve irrigation efficiency. * 28 Spring Development Works and 5 Ponds to enhance local water storage. * 3 Check Dams, 1 Irrigation Canal, and 2 Nallah Bunds to manage water flow and prevent erosion.These interventions have not only improved the water table but have also opened new livelihood opportunities for rural households. Dignitaries at the event praised the IWMP Rajouri team for setting a new benchmark in participatory development, making Block Doongi a model for sustainable rural growth across Jammu and Kashmir.
