Iran Agrees to Two-Week Ceasefire and Temporary Reopening of Strait of Hormuz

TEHRAN, April 8, 2026 — Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi announced on X that the Islamic Republic of Iran has formally entered a two-week ceasefire agreement following a diplomatic breakthrough.

Acting on behalf of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Araghchi confirmed that the nation’s powerful armed forces will cease defensive operations provided that all attacks against Iran are halted.

This de-escalation comes in response to a 15-point proposal from the United States and the reported acceptance by the U.S. President of the general framework of Iran’s own 10-point proposal as a foundation for ongoing negotiations.Central to this temporary truce is a significant concession regarding global energy security.

Araghchi stated that for the duration of the 14-day ceasefire, safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz will be permitted. This maritime access will be strictly managed through coordination with Iran’s Armed Forces, taking into account necessary technical limitations.

While the move signals a tactical pause in regional hostilities, Tehran maintains that its forces remain in a state of readiness, viewing the upcoming negotiations in Islamabad as a pivotal stage in determining a long-term resolution to the conflict.
