Indian Coast Guard Conducts Level 2 Oil Spill Response Course to Protect Andaman Marine Ecology

SRI VIJAYA PURAM, February 14, 2026 — Advancing the nation’s maritime environmental defense, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Region Headquarters (Andaman & Nicobar) successfully concluded its second Level 2 Oil Pollution Preparedness, Response, and Co-operation (OPRC) course.

Held from February 9 to 13 at the Pollution Response Team center in Sri Vijaya Puram under the aegis of the Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC), the intensive training program brought together ICG personnel, various ANC components, and regional stakeholders.

The course was specifically designed to enhance the technical proficiency and coordination required to manage large-scale maritime pollution incidents, ensuring that the strategic waters surrounding the archipelago remain protected from potential ecological disasters.

By focusing on advanced containment strategies and cross-departmental cooperation, the initiative has significantly bolstered the region’s trained manpower and operational readiness for swift oil spill response.

Participants engaged in rigorous drills and theoretical modules to refine their ability to safeguard the fragile marine environment of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, which is home to diverse coral reefs and endangered species.

This training underscores the Indian Coast Guard’s proactive commitment to maritime safety and environmental protection, ensuring that all stakeholders are fully prepared to mitigate the impact of industrial accidents or shipping-related pollution in one of the world’s most ecologically sensitive zones.
