Indian Coast Guard Advances Maritime Strength with Keel Laying and Plate Cutting Ceremonies at MDL

MUMBAI | APRIL 6, 2026 :-Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) marked a significant milestone in the 14 Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) project for the Indian Coast Guard today, hosting a dual ceremony for the keel laying of FPV-4 (Yard 16504) and the plate cutting of FPV-7 (Yard 16507). These ceremonies signify the formal start of construction and the commencement of fabrication for the respective vessels, which are designed to bolster India’s coastal security and law enforcement capabilities. With a displacement of approximately 340 tonnes, these water-jet propelled ships are engineered for high-speed maneuvering and efficiency in the Indian Ocean Region.

In a push toward modernized maritime defense, these FPVs are being outfitted with cutting-edge technology, including AI-based predictive maintenance systems and multipurpose drones to enhance operational reach. The project serves as a flagship for the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative, boasting high indigenous content; key components such as the gearboxes are supplied by M/s Triveni, Mysore, while the water jets are manufactured by M/s MJP India. Once commissioned, these vessels will significantly augment the Bhartiya Tatrakshak’s ability to maintain a vigilant presence and ensure regional maritime safety.
