Indian Army Signs Contract for Advanced Fire Fighting Robot via iDEX Framework

New Delhi | January 16, 2026 — Advancing the mission of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047, the Indian Army has officially signed a procurement contract for a state-of-the-art Fire Fighting Robot.

The contract was executed on January 13, 2026, with M/s Swadeshi Empresa Pvt Ltd at the Indian Army’s Capability Development Directorate. This milestone marks the first time the Army has utilized specific procurement provisions to acquire an iDEX (Innovations for Defence Excellence) product originally developed for a sister service, demonstrating a new level of jointness and integration within the Indian Armed Forces’ technology ecosystem.

The Fire Fighting Robot is a compact, versatile Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) specifically engineered to navigate hazardous environments where high temperatures, toxic smoke, or explosion risks make human intervention life-threatening.

By allowing operators to manage firefighting efforts from a safe standoff distance, the robot significantly enhances the safety of personnel during emergency scenarios. This technology was initially developed under the iDEX framework for the Indian Navy and has now been adopted by the Army following successful Single Stage Composite Trials (SSCT), streamlining the path from innovation to field deployment.

This procurement highlights the growing influence of iDEX under the Defence Innovation Organisation in bridging the gap between military requirements and the startup community. The Indian Army is currently pushing forward with nearly 22 iDEX projects moving toward trials, focusing on spiral development to continuously upgrade existing technologies.

By supporting homegrown startups like Swadeshi Empresa, the military is not only modernizing its equipment but also fostering a robust domestic defense manufacturing sector capable of delivering world-class robotic solutions.
