India Welcomes West Asia Ceasefire, Urges Freedom of Navigation in Strait of Hormuz

NEW DELHI, April 8, 2026 — The Government of India, through the Ministry of External Affairs, has officially welcomed the recently reached ceasefire in West Asia, expressing a firm hope that the truce will pave the way for a “lasting peace” in the region.

In a formal statement released today, New Delhi reiterated its long-standing position on the crisis, emphasizing that de-escalation, sustained dialogue, and active diplomacy remain the only essential tools to secure an early and permanent end to the ongoing conflict. The Indian government underscored its consistent advocacy for these peaceful measures as the primary means to resolve regional tensions.

Beyond the humanitarian concerns, India highlighted the significant global economic toll of the hostilities, noting that the conflict has already inflicted “immense suffering” on civilian populations and caused major disruptions to international energy supplies and trade networks.

A key focal point of the statement was the strategic necessity of maritime stability; the Ministry expressed a clear expectation that “unimpeded freedom of navigation” and the smooth global flow of commerce must prevail through the Strait of Hormuz. This call reflects India’s growing concern over the security of vital trade corridors that are critical to its own energy security and broader global economic stability.
