Historical Discovery: Awantipora Police Recover 694 Rare Antique Coins in Tral; Handed Over to Museums Department
AWANTIPORA, February 25, 2026 — In a significant boost to the preservation of Jammu and Kashmir’s cultural heritage, the Awantipora Police have successfully recovered a massive cache of 694 antique coins from the Pinglish area of Tral.
The discovery was made during a routine operation, with officials indicating that the coins appear to hold immense historical and archaeological significance.
Upon recovery, the artifacts were placed in secure custody at the Tral Police Station under the direct supervision of SHO Inspector Tajamul Islam.
Recognizing the potential value of the find, the police immediately established contact with the Directorate of Archives, Archaeology & Museums to ensure the items are handled with the necessary scientific expertise.
The transition from police custody to the Directorate was conducted in strict adherence to archaeological protocols, ensuring that the ancient currency is preserved for future research and public display.
