SRINAGAR, JANUARY 23, 2026 — The Jammu and Kashmir Disaster Management Authority (JKDMA), in coordination with the Defence Geoinformatics Research Establishment (DGRE), Chandigarh, has issued a High Intensity Avalanche Alert for several districts in the Union Territory.
Valid for the next 24 hours, the warning indicates that avalanches with a high danger level are likely to occur in areas situated above 2,500 meters. The specific regions under threat include the Doda, Kishtwar, Kupwara, Poonch, and Ramban districts.
This emergency alert follows recent heavy snowfall and a prediction of continued inclement weather, including widespread rainfall and snow across the Western Himalayan region.Authorities have strictly advised residents and travelers to avoid avalanche-prone slopes and suspend all movement near potential slide paths.
In case of emergencies, citizens are directed to contact official helplines by dialing 112. The alert is currently effective from 17:30 on January 23 and is set to expire at 17:30 on January 24, 2026, although precautions are recommended throughout the weekend due to volatile mountain weather conditions.
