Heavy Rainfall Lashes Jammu and Kashmir: Baramulla and Poonch Record Highest Precipitation
Srinagar March 31, 2026 — Widespread moderate to heavy rainfall has swept across the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir over the last 24 hours, significantly impacting daily life and raising water levels in local tributaries.
According to data compiled by Kashmir Weather for the period ending at 8:30 a.m. today, the Kashmir Region saw intense activity, with Baramulla recording the highest precipitation at 73.0 mm.
Other North Kashmir areas also faced heavy downpours, including Nowgam Handwara at 58.2 mm, Qazigund at 48.6 mm, and Kupwara at 40.8 mm. The summer capital, Srinagar, recorded a substantial 31.6 mm, while popular tourist destinations like Pahalgam and Gulmarg received 36.8 mm and 33.4 mm respectively.
Some readings, particularly from Pulwama (5.3 mm) and Shopian (7.2 mm), are currently marked as doubtful and under review.
The Jammu Region also experienced significant weather shifts, dominated by a massive 68.5 mm of rainfall in Poonch. Other areas reporting high intensity include Rajouri at 36.2 mm, Ramban at 35.0 mm, and Udhampur at 33.4 mm.
In contrast, the winter capital of Jammu saw a lighter 12.0 mm, while Kathua remained completely dry with 0.0 mm recorded.
Meanwhile, the frontier region of Ladakh remained largely unaffected by the current spell, with Leh reporting no rainfall and data for Kargil currently unavailable.
This surge in precipitation across the valley and the Chenab region follows a period of fluctuating temperatures, providing much-needed moisture for agricultural lands but prompting authorities to monitor vulnerable hilly terrains for potential mudslides.
