Gallantry Beyond Measure: How Lieutenant Lalit Kumar Sharma Earned the Shaurya Chakra in a Fierce Assam Encounter

GUWAHATI, ASSAM — It has been 26 years since a display of valor in the dense vegetation of Assam redefined the meaning of “service before self.” On March 21, 2000, Colonel (then Lieutenant) Lalit Kumar Sharma of the Army Ordnance Corps/18 SIKH etched his name into the annals of Indian military history through an act of extraordinary courage that earned him the prestigious Shaurya Chakra.

The Ban Mola Operation:-Acting on specific intelligence regarding the presence of insurgents, Lieutenant Sharma led a high-stakes search operation in Ban Mola village, Assam.

As the team approached a house complex, they were met with a sudden barrage of heavy automatic fire at close range.

Displaying nerves of steel, the officer immediately retaliated, shooting dead a dreaded militant and recovering an AK-36 rifle. However, the exchange was far from over.

During the fierce gunfight, Lieutenant Sharma sustained a gunshot wound to his right knee.Courage Under FireDespite the agonizing injury and the grave risk to his life, Lieutenant Sharma refused to back down.

He charged at the remaining militants, engaging in close combat and killing a second “hardcore” militant.

His relentless pursuit continued through waterlogged fields and thick vegetation, where he rejoined his radio operator. Lieutenant Sharma’s refusal to seek medical attention until the objective was secured ensured the success of the mission and the safety of his men. His leadership, even while incapacitated, remains a benchmark for junior officers in the Indian Army.

Today, the nation remembers Colonel Lalit Kumar Sharma not just for his tactical brilliance, but for the indomitable spirit he showed twenty-six years ago today.
