Fresh Snowfall Shuts Zojila Pass as Rainfall Boosts Farming Prospects in Kargil
KARGIL, March 10, 2026 — A significant shift in weather across Ladakh has disrupted major transport routes while providing a much-needed boost to the local agricultural sector.
The strategic Zojila Pass on the Srinagar–Leh National Highway (NH-1) was officially closed to all vehicular traffic today following a fresh bout of heavy snowfall and a series of snow avalanches.
While the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) immediately launched snow clearance operations from both the Minamarg and Sonamarg fronts, their efforts have been severely stalled by persistent precipitation, dangerously low visibility, and the recurring threat of slides along the pass.
The regional weather outlook remains challenging, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts continued light to moderate snowfall through March 12. This forecasted window of unstable weather is expected to complicate restoration efforts on the highway, potentially extending the travel blockade for several days.
Residents and travelers are being urged by local authorities to exercise extreme caution and avoid movement near avalanche-prone or vulnerable zones, as the mix of snow and rain has created hazardous, slippery conditions and localized water accumulation. In contrast to the travel disruptions, the precipitation has been greeted with enthusiasm in the lower reaches of the district.
In the Sankoo Sub-Division, heavy rainfall since early this morning has transformed the outlook for the upcoming agricultural cycle. Local farmers view this timely moisture as a “blessing” for the soil, ensuring the ground is sufficiently hydrated for the fast-approaching ploughing season.
This natural irrigation is expected to significantly improve crop yields and support vital farming activities across the Kargil region in the weeks to come.
