SHOPIAN, January 06, 2026: Heavy snowfall resumed in the Heerpora area of Shopian district today following a two-day lull, marking the first significant snow accumulation of the season. The fresh activity has transformed the landscape of the Pir Panjal range into a wintry vista but has simultaneously disrupted regional connectivity.
As a precautionary measure, authorities have officially suspended traffic on the historic Mughal Road due to the thick layer of snow making the mountain pass treacherous for commuters. The snowfall arrives 15 days into Chillai Kalan, the traditional 40-day period of extreme cold in the Kashmir Valley.
While the higher reaches are experiencing a picturesque transformation, the local administration has issued a safety advisory urging residents and travelers to avoid unnecessary journeys.
Officials continue to monitor weather patterns closely, advising the public to stay updated on road clearance operations and follow formal advisories before planning any travel through the affected hilly terrains.
