Former MLA and J&K Congress Leader Dina Nath Bhagat Dies at 79

JAMMU, SEP 8: Dina Nath Bhagat, a prominent political figure in Jammu and Kashmir and a former Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), died in a Ludhiana hospital on Monday morning after a brief illness. He was 79.

According to his family, Bhagat breathed his last around 3:30 am. His son, Naresh, stated that he was initially treated for a lung infection at Jammu’s Government Medical College before being transferred to Ludhiana for advanced care.

A seasoned politician, Bhagat’s career spanned several parties. He won the Chenani assembly seat on a BJP ticket in 2014 but resigned in 2020, labeling the party “anti-Dalit.” After a short period with the National Panthers Party, he joined the Congress in early 2022.

Jammu and Kashmir Congress chief spokesperson Ravinder Sharma expressed profound grief, noting that Bhagat was “very active in politics and social life.”

Bhagat is survived by his wife, three sons, and two daughters. His last rites are scheduled to be performed at Devika in Udhampur later today.
