Fatal Udhampur Car Crash: Baleno Hits Parapet on NH-44, One Dead, two Injured

UDHAMPUR | January 22, 2026 — A tragic accident on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) served as a deadly reminder of the warning “Speed Thrills but Kills,” leaving one young man dead and two others injured.

The incident occurred at approximately 12:15 AM at Phalata, near the Police Naka in Udhampur, when a Maruti Baleno with registration number HP62C1297 was heading toward Udhampur from Jammu.

According to official police reports, Driver lost control and crashed violently into a highway parapet.

Following the collision, Police personals of Rehamble Police station rushed to the spot and all three occupants were evacuated and shifted to the Associated Hospital of Government Medical College (GMC) Udhampur for urgent medical attention.

Despite intensive efforts by the medical staff, one of the victims, identified as Mushfiq Ishtiaq, son of Ishtiaq Parvez and a resident of Gulshan Ground, Jammu, succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

The remaining two injured individuals are currently undergoing treatment at GMC Udhampur, where their condition is being monitored.

Police have officially registered FIR No. 14/2026 under sections 281 and 125(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) to investigate the circumstances of the fatal crash.

Authorities continue to urge motorists to adhere to speed limits, especially during late-night hours, to prevent such avoidable tragedies on the highway.

About Section 281 BNS: Rash Driving or Riding on a Public Way

​This section is the modern equivalent of the old Section 279 of the IPC. It specifically addresses dangerous behavior on the road.

Section 125(a): Act Endangering Life or Personal Safety of Others​:- This section replaces parts of the old Section 337 of the IPC. While Section 281 focuses on the act of driving, Section 125 focuses on the harm or danger caused by negligence.
