Drug Abuse Emerges as Jammu and Kashmir’s Greatest Challenge After Terrorism Says DIG NKR
BARAMULLA, January 06, 2026: Deputy Inspector General of Police (North Kashmir Range), Maqsood Ul Zamaan, stated on Tuesday that drug abuse has become the most significant challenge facing Jammu and Kashmir, second only to terrorism. Speaking to reporters, Zamaan emphasized that the police are executing sustained and rigorous operations to eradicate the narcotics menace, which has seen significant progress in North Kashmir through massive seizures and numerous arrests in recent months.
To further dismantle these criminal networks, law enforcement has begun invoking the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT NDPS) Act and seizing the immovable properties of identified traffickers to sever their financial lifelines.
The DIG underscored that while the police are intensifying their crackdown, the battle against narcotics cannot be won by law enforcement alone. He called for active public cooperation, noting that community support is essential to achieving a drug-free society.
Addressing broader security concerns, Zamaan also highlighted the risks associated with the misuse of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). He warned that these tools are frequently used to mask illegal activities and are being closely monitored due to their potential threat to national security.
Regarding the security situation along the border in North Kashmir, Zamaan reassured the public that despite the region’s sensitivity to infiltration attempts, robust security arrangements are in place. He confirmed that security forces remain on high alert and that the border remains under constant surveillance to thwart any threats.
The police department remains committed to a multi-pronged approach that combines aggressive field operations with community engagement to address both the drug epidemic and regional security challenges effectively.
