CHANDIPUR, ODISHA — In a significant boost to India’s long-range artillery capabilities, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted the maiden flight test of the Pinaka Long Range Guided Rocket (LRGR 120) at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur. During the flight trial, the rocket achieved its maximum intended range of 120 kilometers, successfully demonstrating all planned in-flight maneuvers.
This milestone marks a critical evolution of the indigenous Pinaka system, extending its reach and precision for modern battlefield requirements. The flight test also underscored the tactical flexibility of India’s existing defense infrastructure.
The LRGR 120 was launched using the in-service Pinaka launcher, proving that the current platform can seamlessly deploy various Pinaka variants with different ranges.
This “plug-and-play” capability ensures that the Indian Armed Forces can enhance their firepower without requiring extensive modifications to their existing mobile launcher fleets.
Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh lauded the success, describing the achievement as a “game changer” for national security. He noted that the indigenous design and development of these long-range guided rockets will substantially bolster the operational reach and precision-strike capabilities of the Armed Forces.
The success of the LRGR 120 reflects India’s growing self-reliance in advanced missile technology and high-precision weaponry.
