New Delhi 19 December :- The Department of Telecommunications (DoT), in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), recently hosted a landmark national workshop in New Delhi focused on transitioning India’s telecom industry from “intent to implementation” regarding circular economy practices.
Led by R. N. Palai, Member (Technology) of the Digital Communications Commission, the initiative emphasizes that while the sector contributes less than 2% of national greenhouse gas emissions, its massive scale of 1.2 billion users necessitates a shift toward a lifecycle-based, regenerative model.
The workshop outlined a comprehensive Circular Economy Action Plan addressing sustainable product design, component harvesting, and E-waste management, while advocating for a “Right to Repair” framework. Key stakeholders, including representatives from MeitY, CPCB, and industry leaders like Vodafone Idea, discussed leveraging digital tools such as blockchain and AI for material traceability and transparent supply chains.
Ultimately, the DoT envisages a future where shared ownership between the government and industry drives innovation, ensuring that India’s vital digital infrastructure remains environmentally resilient and aligned with global sustainability goals.
