Dogri Play ‘Pension’ Staged at Abhinav Theatre Jammu; Saptahik Rangdhara Highlights Evolving Family Dynamics
JAMMU, JANUARY 04, 2026: The Abhinav Theatre resonated with artistic excellence today as the Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages (JKAACL) presented the Dogri play “Pension” as part of its ongoing weekly theatre series, “Saptahik Rangdhara.”
Penned by Padma Shri awardee Mohan Singh and directed by the eminent theatre personality Usha Slathia, the play captivated a diverse audience with its realistic and sensitive exploration of middle-class life.
The narrative centers on Mohan Lal Choudhary, a man on the verge of retirement, whose upcoming pension benefits trigger a shift in his family’s behavior.
Through a balance of poignant dialogue and lighthearted humor, the performance masterfully exposed how financial expectations can strain domestic relationships.
The production delved deep into complex household dynamics, contrasting the frequent conflicts between the protagonist’s sons with the mature, stabilizing influence of the daughters-in-law.
A pivotal moment in the play occurs when the distressed Mohan Lal confides in his friend, Chandu Lal Choudhary, contemplating an escape from the overwhelming domestic pressures. However, the story ultimately concludes on a hopeful note, emphasizing that emotional bonds and mutual understanding are far more valuable than material wealth.
The ensemble cast, featuring Ravikant Sharma, Usha Slathia, and Ajit Singh, was widely praised for their powerful performances, while the technical team was recognized for creating a seamless and immersive atmosphere through set design and music.Following the final curtain, JKAACL Additional Secretary Lal Chand, alongside Assistant Cultural Officer Anil Tickoo, felicitated the theatre group with a memento.
The officials lauded the artists and the backstage crew for their dedication to preserving Dogri culture and for delivering a production that underscores the enduring importance of family values and unity.
