Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Orders Crackdown on Single-Use Plastic Across Division

SRINAGAR, MARCH 07: Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Anshul Garg, chaired a high-level meeting of the Divisional Level Plastic Waste Management Cell (PWMC) today to strategize the total elimination of Single-Use Plastic (SUP) and combat plastic pollution within the Union Territory.

Attended by top officials from the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC), Rural Sanitation, and Urban Local Bodies (ULB), the session focused on the rigorous implementation of Plastic Waste Management Rules and the operational status of the Special Task Force.

Director ULB Kashmir briefed the chair on recent enforcement actions, including the seizure of prohibited plastic items and the imposition of fines on violators.

To strengthen the environmental initiative, Divisional Commissioner Garg directed all stakeholder departments to ensure strict enforcement of the SUP ban while simultaneously launching extensive awareness campaigns to educate the public on the ecological dangers of plastic.

During the proceedings, the Director General of Rural Sanitation highlighted that dedicated Collection and Segregation Centres have already been established under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban.

These facilities are designed to streamline plastic waste management by ensuring that waste is properly sorted and disposed of, reinforcing the government’s commitment to a cleaner and more sustainable Kashmir division.
