CM Omar Abdullah Reforms RAS for Faster Compassionate Appointments in J&K
JAMMU, April 06: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah emphasized the urgent need for systemic reforms in the Rehabilitation Assistance Scheme (RAS) to eliminate bureaucratic hurdles and ensure the timely delivery of compassionate appointments.
While presiding over a ceremony at the Convention Centre in Jammu, the Chief Minister personally distributed appointment letters to 124 beneficiaries from the Jammu division under the RAS, SRO-43, and SRO-94 frameworks.
Acknowledging the significant delays that have plagued the process, Abdullah stated that while previous revisions to SRO-43 were intended to accelerate the system, several implementation gaps have emerged that the government is now determined to bridge.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to refining the scheme so that future families do not have to endure prolonged waiting periods during times of personal crisis.
In a poignant address to the new appointees, the Chief Minister noted that while securing a government job is typically a joyous milestone, these specific appointments come at the cost of irreplaceable personal loss. He remarked that the emotional trauma endured by the families is “far greater than any examination,” suggesting that the resilience required to navigate such tragedy is more difficult than clearing the toughest competitive exams.
By choosing to hand over the orders in person rather than mailing them, Abdullah sought to convey a message of empathy and solidarity, assuring the families that the government stands firmly with them.
He urged the new civil servants—many of whom hail from remote areas—to honor their loved ones’ legacies by serving the public with integrity and sincerity, resisting the temptation of “easier paths” in favor of genuine public service.
