JAMMU, JANUARY 08, 2026 : Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today hosted a special felicitation ceremony for the Jammu and Kashmir under-16 cricket team following their landmark victory in the Vijay Merchant Trophy (Plate Group).
Meeting with the young athletes earlier this morning, the Chief Minister personally congratulated each player on their historic achievement, which marks the first time J&K has secured this prestigious title.
During the interaction, he took a keen interest in both their sporting performances and their academic goals, encouraging the squad to maintain their winning momentum while balancing their studies.
While presenting an appreciation trophy to the team, led by Captain Smagey Khajuria, Chief Minister Abdullah emphasized that the win was a testament to the players’ collective discipline and dedication.
He noted that the victory—achieved on January 6 in Surat after a dominant performance against Mizoram—has brought immense pride to the entire Union Territory.
By defeating Mizoram by an innings and 182 runs, the team has set a new benchmark for youth sports in the region, signaling a bright future for J&K cricket on the national stage.
