CM Omar Abdullah Announces ₹46.50 Crore STP for Gulmarg and Stricter Tourism Regulations
JAMMU April 1, 2026 — During the Question Hour of the ongoing Budget Session, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah informed the Legislative Assembly that the government is significantly upgrading the sanitation and waste management infrastructure in Gulmarg to preserve its ecological integrity.
A key highlight of this initiative is the approval of a 2 MLD Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) at an estimated cost of ₹46.50 crore, with construction scheduled to begin in the 2026–27 financial year.
Responding to queries from MLA Kreeri-Wagoora, the Chief Minister added that a Detailed Project Report for a Solid Waste Treatment Plant is currently being finalized.
Furthermore, he addressed the pending registrations for local service providers, such as pony walas and guides, explaining that the freeze is a deliberate policy decision intended to manage the destination’s carrying capacity, prevent overcrowding, and ensure long-term environmental sustainability.
In a broader discussion regarding the regional tourism sector initiated by MLA Zadibal Tanvir Sadiq, Chief Minister Abdullah detailed the administration’s efforts to enhance service standards and stakeholder accountability.
While there is currently no proposal for mandatory rating certifications, the Tourism Department is intensifying capacity-building programs covering essential skills from hospitality etiquette to first aid and risk management.
The Chief Minister emphasized that maintaining professional conduct is vital for the tourism economy, noting that while no major decline in arrivals has occurred due to misconduct, isolated complaints are strictly addressed.
Highlighting a robust monitoring framework, he revealed that out of 508 grievances received since January 2025 via helplines and online portals, 413 have already been successfully resolved, underscoring the government’s commitment to a safe and disciplined visitor experience.
