CBI Arrests Mumbai CGST Superintendent for Accepting ₹5 Lakh Bribe

MUMBAI, DECEMBER 23: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a Superintendent of CGST Audit-I, Mumbai, for allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹5 lakh from a complainant. The arrest followed a written complaint from the Director of a private company, who alleged that the official had threatened to fabricate a tax demand of ₹98 lakh following an audit conducted in November 2025.

While the accused initially demanded ₹20 lakh to “settle” the matter, he eventually agreed to a sum of ₹17 lakh, with the ₹5 lakh payment intended as the first installment. CBI officials caught the Superintendent red-handed during a trap operation on December 22, 2025. Subsequent searches at the official’s residence led to the recovery of ₹18.30 lakh in unexplained cash and property deeds worth over ₹72 lakh, while digital evidence was seized from his office as the investigation continues.
