CBI Arrests Income Tax Stenographer in Chennai for Accepting ₹1.5 Lakh Bribe
Chennai, India — February 3, 2026The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a Stenographer working within the Income Tax Department in Chennai for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹1.5 lakh. The arrest follows a targeted operation based on a formal complaint filed against the official for corrupt practices related to tax assessments.
According to the CBI, the case was registered on February 2, 2026, after allegations surfaced that the accused demanded an “undue advantage” equivalent to 10% of a complainant’s outstanding tax dues. The complainant reportedly owed ₹19 lakh for the Assessment Year 2020-2021, and the stenographer allegedly offered to nullify these dues in exchange for the illegal gratification.
Acting on this information, the CBI laid a trap and caught the accused red-handed while he was accepting the bribe money. Following the “trap proceedings,” the agency recovered the ₹1.5 lakh in cash and conducted extensive searches at the suspect’s residence, which led to the seizure of several incriminating documents.
The accused was produced before a Competent Court in Chennai today, February 3, where he was remanded to judicial custody. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities look deeper into the matter.
