JAMMU, FEBRUARY 07, 2026: During the ongoing Budget Session, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah clarified the government’s stance on administrative expansion, stating that there are currently no plans to create new administrative units in Jammu and Kashmir.
Intervening during Question Hour, the Chief Minister emphasized that the administration’s primary focus is to strengthen and fully operationalize the units that were established by previous governments but remain underutilized or non-functional due to resource gaps. The Chief Minister’s remarks came in response to supplementary queries raised by MLA Khanyar, Salman Ali Sagar, and other legislators regarding the potential bifurcation of Eidgah and Srinagar North tehsils to create a new administrative zone.
Addressing the House, the Chief Minister noted that many MLAs have expressed concerns about existing units lacking the necessary infrastructure to serve the public. “It is impractical to demand new units when existing ones remain non-operational,” he remarked, adding that any future expansion would only be considered once the current framework is made fully functional and efficient.
Earlier in the session, Jal Shakti Minister Javed Ahmed Rana, speaking on behalf of the Chief Minister (who holds the Revenue portfolio), assured the Legislative Assembly that public services in the Eidgah and Srinagar North tehsils are currently being delivered within the timelines mandated by the Public Services Guarantee Act (PSGA). He informed the house that existing manpower and infrastructure are being utilized optimally, and there is no immediate proposal to bifurcate these areas.
Legislators Abdul Majeed Larmi and Tanvir Ali Sadiq also participated in the discussion, highlighting the persistent public demand for localized governance.
