Baramulla Police Debunks False Rocket Attack Rumors: Strict Legal Action Warned Against Fake News

BARAMULLA, FEBRUARY 06, 2026 — The Baramulla Police has issued a strong rebuttal regarding a viral social media post on X (formerly Twitter) that falsely claimed militants targeted an Army oil tanker with a rocket in the district.

Authorities clarified that the post is entirely fabricated and designed to incite public panic. Providing the actual context of the event, the police stated that on February 05, 2026, an empty oil tanker (Registration No. JK01AN-8569) caught fire near Chinar Point, Pattan, while returning to Srinagar from Uri.

The blaze was purely accidental, triggered by a mechanical short circuit, and was swiftly extinguished by the Fire & Emergency Services and local police with no casualties or injuries reported.The police administration has warned that the dissemination of such misinformation is a serious, punishable offense.

Legal proceedings are being initiated against those responsible for circulating the lies under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act, 2000.

Emphasizing the importance of digital responsibility, the Baramulla Police advised the general public to refrain from sharing unverified content and to depend exclusively on official government channels for authentic information.

This move underscores the department’s commitment to maintaining public order and countering the influence of malicious propaganda in the region.
