Army Hospital R&R Delhi Achieves Global First in Precision Glaucoma Surgery

NEW DELHI, March 11, 2026 — Marking a historic milestone in the field of ophthalmology, surgeons at the Army Hospital (Research & Referral) in Delhi have successfully performed the world’s first Hydrus Microstent implantation guided by intraoperative aqueous angiography.

Conducted on March 10, 2026, the pioneering procedure was performed alongside cataract surgery, utilizing the state-of-the-art Heidelberg Retina Angiograph (HRA) to visualize aqueous outflow pathways in real-time. This breakthrough allows for the exceptionally precise placement of the implant within Schlemm’s canal, significantly enhancing drainage and offering superior long-term outcomes for patients suffering from glaucoma.

This global first represents a major leap forward in Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS), transitioning from standard techniques to high-precision, image-guided interventions. The achievement highlights the rapid modernization and commitment to cutting-edge medical innovation within the Indian Defence Forces.

Under the visionary leadership of Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin, Director General Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS), the successful operation underscores the military’s role in advancing global healthcare standards and providing world-class ophthalmic care to its personnel and the nation.
