Ancient Stone Sculpture of Goddess Durga Recovered from River Jhelum in Baramulla; Handed Over to Archaeology Department
BARAMULLA, December 26, 2025: In a significant find for the region’s cultural history, the Baramulla Police has facilitated the safe recovery and handover of an ancient stone sculpture discovered in the River Jhelum.
The artifact was found on December 25, 2025, by a local fisherman, Nazir Ahmad Latoo, a resident of Shaltang/Zogyar, while he was fishing in the river. Recognizing the potential historical value of the object, Latoo immediately alerted the authorities at Police Station Sheeri, where the sculpture was placed in safe custody to prevent any damage or unauthorized handling.
Following the discovery, the police coordinated with the Directorate of Archives, Archaeology & Museums, J&K. Experts identified the stone sculpture as a representation of Goddess Durga. Today, December 26, 2025, in compliance with official protocols and directives from the Directorate, the Baramulla Police formally transferred the artifact to officials from the Archaeology Wing, Srinagar.
This official handover/takeover process ensures that the sculpture will now undergo professional preservation and conservation to safeguard its structural and historical integrity.The Baramulla Police praised the civic sense of the local fisherman and reiterated their steadfast commitment to the protection of the Union Territory’s rich cultural heritage.
Authorities have urged all citizens to remain vigilant and promptly inform the police or relevant departments regarding any similar discoveries of archaeological or historical importance, ensuring that the region’s past is preserved for future generations.
