Ancient Sculpture Recovered from River Jhelum Preserved by Awantipora Police

AWANTIPORA, December 29, 2025: Highlighting its commitment to safeguarding the region’s cultural legacy, the Awantipora Police have successfully ensured the preservation of a centuries-old stone sculpture discovered in the River Jhelum at Larkipora.

The rare artifact, which reflects the profound historical and artistic heritage of the Kashmir Valley, has been formally handed over to experts from the Directorate of Archives, Archaeology & Museums, J&K.

The handover will facilitate professional documentation, scientific examination, and long-term conservation of the fine stone carving in accordance with established archaeological norms.

Following the initial discovery, the sculpture was immediately secured under the supervision of the Station House Officer (SHO) of the Awantipora Police Station to protect it from potential damage or illegal handling.

Through seamless coordination between law enforcement and the Department of Archaeology, the artifact was kept in safe custody until the specialized team arrived.

This successful recovery underscores the multifaceted role of the Jammu & Kashmir Police, who, beyond maintaining public order, remain dedicated to protecting the Union Territory’s archaeological treasures and promoting awareness of Kashmir’s rich historical identity.
