Legal Metrology and Food Supplies departments penalize oil mills in Jammu for packaging violations

JAMMU, May 26, 2026 — Under the directions of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Director Rajesh Kumar Shavan, a joint enforcement team conducted surprise inspections of commercial oil mills in the Gangyal industrial area today to protect consumer rights and enforce manufacturing standards.

The inspection team, which included the Deputy Director of Planning and Statistics, Assistant Directors, and inspectors from both the Food Supplies and Legal Metrology departments, focused on verifying the accuracy of packaged goods and pricing transparency.

During the inspection of Sansar Oil Mill, the joint team detected significant weight discrepancies in the stock of refined oil bottles, which carried a declared weight of 675 grams. Following the discovery of the variation, the Legal Metrology Department halted the packing operations of the unit, seized the irregular stock, and served a formal seizure memo for further legal action.

Earlier in the day, the same team inspected JK Oil Mills, where similar packaging discrepancies were found in oil containers carrying a declared weight of 15 kilograms. The Legal Metrology Department subsequently imposed a fine of 2 lakh on the unit under relevant consumer protection laws.

Authorities emphasized that these surprise checks will continue across the Jammu Division to eliminate underweight, substandard, or overpriced commodities from the market.
