Lt Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena orders major crackdown as drug abuse cases surge in Ladakh
LEH, May 26, 2026 — Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena has expressed serious concern over a sharp spike in substance abuse across the Union Territory, warning that the menace puts almost every age group at a grave risk.
Highlighting a disturbing trend, he noted that the rapid involvement of minors and young girls in drug abuse has significantly complicated the situation. Recent statistics reveal that 298 new cases of drug abuse have emerged in the region over recent months, which notably include 101 cases related to opioids alongside 40 cases involving cannabis and poly-substance abuse.
In response to the growing crisis, the Lieutenant Governor has instructed the Director General of Police to implement strict enforcement measures and launch an immediate crackdown to eliminate drug trafficking hideouts.
Emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy, he stated that stringent action will be taken against anyone caught smuggling or consuming illicit substances.
Furthermore, the Lieutenant Governor has urged social, religious, cultural, political, and educational leaders to actively raise awareness to protect families, while appealing to the citizens of Ladakh to proactively report any suspicious drug-related activities to the authorities.
