Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena inaugurates redeveloped Choglamsar Protected Forest in Leh
LEH, May 25, 2026 — Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena officially inaugurated the newly restored and redeveloped Choglamsar Protected Forest during his transit visit to Leh. The pristine public green asset, situated beautifully on the banks of the River Sindhu, stands as a unique ecological milestone for the union territory.
The newly redeveloped urban forest has been designed to offer a variety of eco-friendly, nature-oriented recreational spaces and essential public amenities.
Visitors to the green zone can now access a dedicated nature trail, an expansive nature park, a cycle track, distinct biodiversity and wellness zones, gazebos, and strategically placed viewpoints designed to help citizens and travelers connect and strike a perfect harmony with nature.
The ambitious environmental project was completed in a record time frame following a severe degradation of the local ecosystem. The Lieutenant Governor extended his compliments to the Forest Department for remarkably restoring and beautifying this protected forest patch in just 45 days, following his initial site inspection on April 7 and his subsequent directives to transform the heavily degraded landscape.
Saxena expressed his confidence that the Choglamsar Protected Forest will quickly emerge as a must-visit destination for incoming tourists, while simultaneously serving as a highly successful and replicable model for sustainable environmental conservation and climate resilience efforts across the entire Ladakh region.
