Satish Sharma highlights sports as powerful weapon against drug abuse at BSF event

JAMMU, May 24, 2026Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Information Technology, Science and Technology, Youth Services and Sports and Transport Satish Sharma attended the closing ceremony of the BSF Jammu Region Lawn Tennis Spandan League 2026 at Indreshwar Nagar in Miran Sahib, Jammu.

Organized under the banner of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of the Border Security Force, the event marked 60 years of dedicated service by the force to the nation. The closing ceremony witnessed the participation of senior BSF officers, jawans, sports officials, athletes, and distinguished guests, reflecting the values of discipline, endurance, and commitment that resonate deeply with the ethos of the security forces.

Addressing the gathering, Satish Sharma expressed gratitude for being part of the occasion and lauded the BSF for organizing an event that combines sports with a larger social and national purpose. He said that sports are not merely about competition and winning medals but are a powerful medium for character building, social transformation, and nation building.

Sharing his personal connection with the armed forces, the Minister added that he carries immense respect for the sacrifices and unwavering commitment of soldiers who dedicate their lives to protect the country, noting that their discipline inspires generations and strengthens the social fabric.Satish Sharma expressed deep concern over the increasing challenge posed by drug abuse in Jammu and Kashmir, terming it a serious threat to society that targets vulnerable youth and creates emotional distress across communities.

Highlighting sports as one of the most effective deterrents against substance abuse, he emphasized that active participation in sports keeps young minds positively engaged and channels their energy toward productive and meaningful pursuits. He stated that every young individual who chooses sports chooses discipline over addiction and determination over distraction, creating a sense of purpose that helps youth stay away from destructive influences.

The Minister also underlined the importance of healthy lifestyle choices, proper nutrition, and fitness for athletes, urging the youth to move toward natural food choices. He reiterated the commitment of the government toward promoting a vibrant sports culture, creating opportunities for young athletes, and ensuring an enabling ecosystem for youth empowerment.

Satish Sharma congratulated the winners, participants, and the organizing committee, acknowledging the support extended by the Sports Authority of India and Khelo India. He concluded by reaffirming that strong institutions, active youth participation, and a sports culture hold the key to building a healthier, stronger, and drug-free Jammu and Kashmir.
