CG City Wetland Lucknow restoration boosts biodiversity to over 400 species
LUCKNOW, May 22, 2026 — The Gomti Task Force of the 137 Composite Ecological Task Force Battalion Territorial Army, 39 Gorkha Rifles, joined forces with the Lucknow Development Authority and the Turtle Survival Alliance Foundation India to host a major biodiversity awareness programme at the CG City Wetland in Lucknow.
Held on the occasion of the International Day for Biological Diversity 2026 under the theme “Acting locally for global impact,” the event brought together students, local residents, environmental stakeholders, and volunteers. Participants engaged in interactive awareness sessions, bird watching, and a dedicated wetland clean-up drive, all aimed at strengthening community resolve to halt and reverse local environmental degradation.
The event highlights the ongoing success of the CG City Wetland Rejuvenation Campaign, which was originally launched in November 2025. This collaborative initiative focuses on restoring the vital urban wetland, which serves as a critical biodiversity hotspot, groundwater recharge zone, and essential ecological buffer supporting the Gomti River.
Thanks to these sustained joint restoration efforts and active community participation, the wetland has seen a significant ecological recovery and now supports 434 distinct species. The initiative highlights a continuing commitment to environmental stewardship, balancing ecological restoration with community action to ensure long-term sustainability.
