Donald Trump postpones planned military strike on Iran following Gulf leaders request

WASHINGTON May 19,2026 — US President Donald Trump announced that he has postponed a major military strike against Iran that was scheduled to take place on Tuesday.

The decision followed direct interventions from the leaders of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, who requested additional time to allow ongoing diplomatic efforts to progress.

The regional leaders indicated that serious negotiations are currently underway and expressed optimism that a comprehensive agreement can be reached to defuse the regional conflict.

The planned assault was halted after assurance from Middle Eastern allies that a potential diplomatic resolution could permanently block Iran from securing nuclear capabilities.

According to statements released on social media, the proposed agreement would ensure that no nuclear weapons are developed or held by Tehran, a primary objective for Washington and its partners. Trump noted that he chose to respect the request of the allied nations to give diplomacy a final window to yield a breakthrough.

Despite pausing the immediate operation, the White House has placed American forces on heightened alert. Trump confirmed he has ordered Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Daniel Caine, and the wider military leadership to remain fully prepared for a large-scale offensive.

The administration emphasized that a comprehensive military assault remains an active option and will be executed on a moment’s notice if the current diplomatic talks fail to deliver an acceptable agreement.
