PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti advocates dialogue and release of detainees ahead of Eid

SRINAGAR, May 17, 2026 :- Peoples Democratic Party President Mehbooba Mufti appealed for the release of detainees ahead of Eid, describing the step as the first real confidence-building measure that could help restore trust and reconciliation in Kashmir.

Addressing a gathering at Sher-e-Kashmir Park in Srinagar, the former Chief Minister emphasized that New Delhi will have to listen to the voice of the people of Kashmir, noting that the ultimate resolution of the regional issue lies in dialogue within the framework of the Constitution.

She reiterated her party’s belief in engagement and talks, stating that they seek peace with dignity for the region.The PDP chief also urged Pakistan to respond positively to India’s outreach efforts, noting that previous attempts by the Prime Minister to initiate dialogue and normalize relations were met with an inappropriate response from the other side.

Appealing directly to the Prime Minister, she stated that infrastructure development alone cannot address the deep-rooted issues faced by the people of Jammu and Kashmir. She emphasized that while development remains important, engaging in talks could foster statesmanship for peace across South Asia.

Furthermore, she stated that the prevailing atmosphere of silence and fear in Kashmir must end, stressing that the youth deserve dignity, hope, and realistic opportunities. Calling for an end to hatred, she noted that the message of peace often discussed by RSS leaders should be visibly reflected on the ground through practical measures.

She concluded that releasing prisoners before the upcoming festival would send a strong message of healing, reconciliation, and goodwill to the people of Kashmir.
