Kashmir’s Strawberry Farmers Seek Youth Support, Better Transport for Wider Markets

Srinagar May 06,2026 :- Strawberry growers in Gassu Srinagar popularly known as Kashmir’s “Strawberry Village” have reported a promising harvest this season, thanks to favourable weather conditions that boosted both yield and quality. The lush fields of the area are currently brimming with fresh, vibrant strawberries, marking a productive period for local farmers.
Despite the encouraging output, growers say the future of strawberry cultivation in the region depends heavily on greater involvement from the younger generation. They describe the practice as labour-intensive, requiring careful planting, regular maintenance, and timely harvesting.
Many farmers expressed concern that without youth participation, this traditional and profitable activity could gradually decline.“We have been cultivating strawberries for years, but it requires dedication and hard work.
Young people need to step forward to carry this legacy,” said a local farmer, highlighting the need to preserve the region’s agricultural heritage. In addition to workforce challenges, farmers pointed to transportation as a major hurdle in expanding their market reach. Strawberries, being highly perishable, require quick and efficient delivery to maintain freshness.
Growers have urged the government to introduce dedicated train services from Kashmir to major markets across the country, which they believe would significantly reduce losses and improve profits.Currently, limited transport options often delay shipments, affecting both quality and pricing.
Farmers say improved rail connectivity would not only benefit strawberry producers but also open new avenues for other horticultural products from the Valley.Agriculture experts agree that with proper support, including infrastructure development and youth engagement, Kashmir’s strawberry industry has the potential to grow into a major contributor to the region’s economy.
As the season progresses, farmers remain hopeful that their voices will be heard and necessary steps will be taken to sustain and expand this vibrant sector.
