Ladakh Green Initiative: Exotic Flowering Trees and Bamboo Planted in Leh for the First Time
LEH, April 8, 2026 — In a landmark move toward environmental sustainability and regional beautification, the Union Territory Administration of Ladakh has launched a unique pilot project to introduce bamboo and several varieties of exotic flowering trees to the high-altitude desert of Leh.
Announced by Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena via social media, the initiative marks the first time that species such as Gulmohar, Jacaranda, Bougainvillea, and Amaltas have been planted in the region.
To ensure the survival of these plants in Ladakh’s challenging arid climate, the saplings were transported from Delhi and kept under strictly controlled conditions for a ten-day acclimatization period before being planted on an experimental basis in and around Lok Niwas.
This green drive is designed to do more than just improve the local scenery; it aims to significantly enrich the floral diversity of the Ladakh range while promoting long-term environmental health.
To safeguard the success of the project, a dedicated team of horticulture experts has been assigned to monitor the growth and health of the saplings closely.
If the experiment proves successful, it could pave the way for a more vibrant, green aesthetic across the territory, balancing Ladakh’s rugged natural beauty with sustainable, diverse botanical life.
